Wandering through the medinas of Morocco (the historic, walled old cities found in many Moroccan towns), I encountered a number of tiled plaques embedded into city walls and buildings. Most of them had a single-color decorative border, and the text inside this border was most often a place name or directions to a place, set in multiple languages.
The calligraphic tile work on these plaques (examples: Vers Place Jamaa El Fna, Souk Talaa) was very detail oriented and unique. The letterforms of Maison Chamaine were a playful mix of sizes. Pension Elkasbah’s curvy letters fit well with the decorative tile work surrounding it. These plaques stand out as a unique feature of the public lettering environment within Morocco.
