On my trip to Morocco in 2026 I encountered a set of informal hand-painted signs in Morocco that absolutely delighted me. Primarily white text on a black background, these signs used keys as a symbol to indicate a real estate broker or agency. The sign Real Estate Broker | سمسار الأملاك found in the Marrakesh medina (old city) was a perfect example of this genre of signs; this sign and a few other examples are below.
Though not related to real estate, the Serrurier | صانع المفاتيح | Locksmith sign pictured here is from the Habous neighborhood of Casablanca and also features key imagery; it’s for a key-maker/locksmith.
