The Sahara Hotel and Casino opened as the sixth hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. It originally featured 240 rooms housed in four modest two-story buildings situated around an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The resort featured an African Sahara theme with plaster camel statues outside and murals depicting lush desert scenes. The property branded itself as the “Jewel of the Desert.” The Sahara was known for its lounge shows, with many famous stars performing in its primary venue, the Congo Room. This sign was part of a porte-cochère, the covered drive-through entryway welcoming guests to the property, and is a replica on a smaller scale of the main pylon signage, which is shown above.
